BREGUET ET FILS, c. 1820, later gold case, engine-turned silver dial, key-wind push hour-repeating movement with ruby-cylinder escapement and steel hammers striking gongs, 51mm. This became the famous firm's name in 1807 when Abraham-Louis Breguet partnered with his son Antoine-Louis. Collector Notes: In 1783 Breguet invented an innovative repeating method by fitting steel wire gongs around the periphery of the movement. During the French Revolution, "toc" repetition became less popular. The new gongs enabled thinner watch designs and cleaner sounds. Earlier Breguet movements may have toc repeating, but later ones used this gong system."
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, inconsistent repeat function with frequent errors to return of hour strikes which follow no discernible pattern, good repeat tone aside from a consistent return of final quarter-hour strike as a soft tap, overhaul needed for normalized repeat function, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, some oxide to steelwork, some elements of barrel stopworks with micro-fine scratch striations from a past sanding; dial with some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches, some small surface marks at 10:30, some losses of black color to hour numerals; excellent hands; case lids opening substantially wide (bezel to approximately 165 degrees, rear and cuvette to approximately 150 degrees), case shows light wear, scattered dings and few nicks to rear causing rippling of reflected light, small gouge to bezel at 10; bow pivots semi-freely; good glass crystal.
