This flag is just such a rarity. This Historic Icon is from the Judge W.M. Williams Estate (Montgomery County, Texas) was presented in 1913 as a gift from Mr. Nicholas Carnochan. Mr. Carnochan identified as a Confederate War veteran who had served as a musician (band leader) in the Army of Northern Virginia, Stonewall Jackson Division, 13th Alabama, where he had come into possession of The Flag while at The Battle of the Wilderness, May 6th 1864 and captured as a prisoner. We will never know how Mr. Carnochan concealed The Flag from Union soldiers, perhaps he sewed it into the lining of his coat. Mr. Carnochan was later released from Elmira Prison, New York after the war on June 16th 1865. We suggest you do research on Elmira Prison. Many years after the war ended and then living in Montgomery County, Texas, Mr. Carnochan sought Judge Williams' assistance in a legal matter involving his Confederate pension. In appreciation Mr. Carnochan presented the Judge with The Flag. After 108 Years in the family, The Judge W.M. Estate has commissioned Hradil Auction Co. to sell at public auction The Flag to a special person to preserve a paramount specimen of American History.
