EPW - Wm. Thornton, London, gold repoussé verge fusee, 57mm, OF cases, outermost display case is gilt with shagreen and piqué finish, 18-22K gold (tested) central and inner cases, central case with attractive classical repoussé detail, interior of central case reveals the central portion is a separate sheet of repoussé gold that has been pinned and soldered in place presumably as replacement for original material in this area, inner case bearing London hallmarks for 1768, incuse casemaker's marking with first letter largely lost to rub and second letter a "W," inner case with initials lightly scribed to its rear, white enamel dial with arcaded minute chapter, KWKS (key not included with this lot), verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque mask at its neck, s#1827. Gross weight of assembled watch 84.4 dwt (131.3 g); gross weight of assembled watch with gilt display case excluded 62.6 dwt (97.4 g). From the estate of David Strudler.
CONDITION: Mvt: Started running on a partial wind but winding arbor turns very stiffly and we did not proceed further with winding, overhaul strongly recommended for this issue and we recommend next owner not engage winding until this has been addressed, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, lead solder spot to main plate at "L" of "London" where base foot of crown wheel has been secured, short scratches around pillar positions, some additional fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere; dial with scattered scratches, small edge chipping at 6 adjacent slot for mvt release latch; excellent hands; outer display case shows medium wear, scattered nicks, wear to brass to much of gilt portions, significant shagreen losses including entirety of front bezel shagreen lost between 9 and 1, some losses of piqué elements which is primarily to front; central case with internally affixed plate at center, case shows hardly any wear, few scattered nicks, superb engraving detail; inner case shows light wear, some scattered dents and dings, hallmarks with pronounced trace-through to exterior of rear, evident past repair of pendant junction; bow pivots freely; domed glass bull's-eye display case crystal with scattered short scratches and nicks, inner case domed glass bull's-eye crystal with large finish bubble above-right of bull's-eye area, scattered scratches and nicks.
