Leroy, better known on the CB as "Oscar Clyde," was the proud owner of a white 1973 Kenworth C.O.E. 2-Axle truck, affectionately called Rough Condition. The truck, a little worse for wear but still chugging along, was Leroy’s livelihood and his home on the road.
With his well-worn trucker’s hat tilted low, his gray goatee matching the steel frame of his rig, Leroy rolled into truck stops like a regular. He'd park Rough Condition, its paint chipped and rust showing, and head inside for a bag of Fritos and a cold can of Olympia Beer. Between bites, he packed his lower lip with chewing tobacco, spitting expertly into an empty glass soda bottle.
Back in the cab, Leroy tuned into CB chatter, where he exchanged banter with other truckers. "Oscar Clyde" was a familiar handle in those parts, always up for a late-night conversation or giving road advice. The truck’s radio crackled, the engine rumbled, and Leroy kept rolling, mile after mile. Rough around the edges, just like Rough Condition, but still kicking, still driving forward. Leroy and his truck were survivors of the long haul, partners on the open road.
