John Rosa, borin in Turlock, California July 6 1953. A painter and sculptor for 40 years. A student of art and American Indian history. Attended Black Hills State College in South Dakota in 1974-75.
John has spent the last 25 years living and working between Santa Fe, New Mexico and New York City, New York. He has had exhibitions and shows all over the country including Art Expo NYC. Stendahl Gallery, 21st Century Fox Gallery, Millivolte Studios, Hamilton Gallery, Pittman Fine Arts and so many more!
Johns oil paintings are of varied subject matter, bother figurative and abstract and range in size from 24" x 32" to 8' x 8'. Political and historical paintings were his main subject matter in the late 70's and early 80's. A 1985 painting "The History of the Plains Indians" covered four panels, measures 7' x 30' and now hangs in a famous mid-west courthouse.
Recent works are mostly female figures and abstracts (cubist style), done in oils and carved in marble, alabaster and soapstone. The stones come from various quarries in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Colorado and Arizona with colors including pink, white, red orange, green and brown. All carvings are done by hand with chisels, files (rasps), and sand paper.
In 1993, Stendahl Editions of New York City produced a series of prints from John's paintings. In 1994 Art Images of Sparks, Nevada also produced a series of prints from other works by John. These limited edition prints are currently being sold in Japan, Europe, and across the USA, but have become very limited and difficult to find.
John is of Portuguese, English and Cherokee descent. Like many artists, John spent his early years working odd jobs, hitchhiking around the United States, living where he could and selling his work on the streets and in coffee shops. These experiences still inspire many of his current and ongoing works.
