Very Old Minoan Griffon Naval Buckle. Griffon is raised on the metal by being pressed from the back side. We didn't find another buckle like this one to compare to on the web. The griffon and anchor have a history representing the US Navy as their Symbol but this one is a bit different. The griffon on this buckle wears a crown, holds the anchor to the front and has a flower attached to the tail. Likely a naval buckle for one of several countries that use or have used the Griffon in their coat of arms - U.S., Lativia, Lithuania, Austria-Hungary, Pomerania and various towns and regions in different countries, including Germany, France, Hungary, and the United Kingdom who have incorporate the griffin into their symbols. The Wingless Griffon has a history going back to the 15th Century. The Minoan Griffon is one name for a wingless griffon. Other names include alke, a keythong, or a male griffin. An interesting piece with character. Metal appears to be Iron and the rings on the back of it are copper. This buckle measures 1 5/8" by 1 9/16" Authentic
