Lot # 8ST
Lead 1880 Gorham Mini Sterling Remington Rolling Block
Description
RARE Miniature Sterling Silver Model of Remington's 7mm "Rolling Block" Buffalo Hunter Rifle made by Gorham Silver circa 1865-1880 based on markings weight = 15.4 grams It is difficult to find any information about Gorham making these but they did make trophies and prizes for marksmanship contests so we believe it could possibly be a National Rifle Association NRA Marksmanship Sharpshooter Token / Prize. Stamped with Lion, Anchor & G STERLING 125 M the lion faces right and looks like the mark dated from 1852-1865. Gorham began using letters for years in 1862 and M corresponds to 1880. About the Rolling Block Rifle: "The Remington Rolling Block rifle was a breech-loading rifle produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company). " "The Remington Rider rolling block became Remington's enduring plains or "buffalo" single shot rifle design. It was probably the most popular rifle used by the old time buffalo (bison) hunters. It evolved from a design patented in 1863 by a Remington employee named Leonard Geiger and was improved over the next three years by Joseph Rider, who was the Remington factory superintendent. By 1866 the Remington-Rider rolling block rifle had evolved." "The Remington Rolling Block rifle was awarded the Silver Medal at the World Exposition in Paris in 1867, being proclaimed "Best in World". references: http://www.chuckhawks.com/remington_no1_rifles.htm http://www.emf-company.com/store/pc/Rolling-Block-Rifles-c128.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_Rolling_Block_rifle tall: .75" long: 3" Location: Front B 2
