Own a piece of history from the earliest days of Andrew Johnson's Presidency.
President Johnson took office on April 15th 1865 after the death of President Lincoln. This commission was signed only five days later and appoints Benjamin B Campbell - Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of Captain.
According to heraldbulletin.com: • Benjamin B. Campbell (of the 34th Indiana Volunteer Regiment) began as a sergeant but was awarded the captaincy of Co. G, “for meritorious service during Vicksburg Campaign.? He eventually rose to major. He was later appointed by President Lincoln to Assistant Adjutant-General of United States Volunteers."
This is by all appearances an authentic, antique parchment document, intricately detailed at top and bottom with etchings / engravings of American eagle, flags and weapons of war, bearing the presidential seal, official letterhead and the signature of President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.
(For his later attempts to dismiss Stanton after Congress passed the Tenure of Office Act, Johnson would face impeachment by the House of Representatives and narrowly avoid conviction in the Senate)
