$6.00 Bill, 1776 Continental Currency with Fair to About Good features. The bill torn down the center and of course not clean, but readable. Per The Greysheet: Continental currency was authorized on May 10, 1775 in a session of the Continental Congress and became the first federally issued paper money, predating the official birth of the United States by more than a full year. Continental currency is particularly historic because its issuance helped finance the American Revolution, which spanned from 1775 through 1783 and secured the United States as an independent nation. The notes were styled after Pennsylvania notes in use at that time and printed by Hall and Sellers in Philadelphia on thick rag paper with mica flakes and blue fibers manufactured by Ivy Mills in nearby Chester, Pennsylvania. The notes, which did not bear interest, were promises to pay the bearer and circulated alongside colonial paper currency issued by the individual colonies. While the notes promised payment to their bearers and were redeemed with the taxes collected by the individual colonies, the notes became virtually worthless after runaway inflation set in, causing many in the public to lose confidence in paper currency, giving rise to the phrase not worth a Continental. The dramatic devaluation of Continental currency did little to instill public confidence in paper currency, which the United States would not print again until the start of the Civil War in 1861. The review of the other coins did not include a review of FBL or Bugs Bunny variety. The dates of the coins are from 1948 to 1963. Franklin Half Dollars were minted from 1948 to 1963 at all three United States Mints, San Francisco, Denver and Philadelphia. All struck in 90% Silver. Obverse: Bust of Benjamin Franklin with "Liberty" and "In God We Trust" with the date placed below the chin on the left side. Reverse: Liberty Bell Image with "United States of America, Half Dollar and the D or S Mint would appear above the liberty bell just below the "E" in states. A beautiful series that is fairly easy to make a complete set, tough dates are: 1948-P, 1949-D, 1949-S and the 1952-S. Fun fact about Franklin Half Dollars: At the time of issue, the design was criticized by many, perhaps because it is rather plain in comparison to the “classic” Liberty Walking style. The Monroe Doctrine Centennial half dollar was a fifty-cent piece struck by the United States Bureau of the Mint. Bearing portraits of former U.S. Presidents James Monroe and John Quincy Adams, the coin was issued in commemoration of the centennial of the Monroe Doctrine and was produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1923. Sculptor Chester Beach is credited with the design, although the reverse closely resembles an earlier work by Raphael Beck. In 1922, the motion picture industry was faced with a number of scandals, including manslaughter charges against star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Although Arbuckle was eventually acquitted, motion picture executives sought ways of getting good publicity for Hollywood. One means was an exposition, to be held in Los Angeles in mid-1923. To induce Congress to issue a commemorative coin as a fundraiser for the fair, organizers associated the exposition with the 100th anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, and legislation for a commemorative half dollar for the centennial was passed. The exposition was a financial failure. The coins did not sell well, and the bulk of the mintage of over 270,000 was released into circulation. Beach faced accusations of plagiarism because of the similarity of the reverse design to a work by Beck, though he and fellow sculptor James Earle Fraser denied any impropriety.
